A while back, I made a mini quilt for a swap that I liked so much I finally decided I wanted a version of it for my wall, too! I had a charm pack of Kate Spain fabrics that was waiting for a good use, and since the Kite Block pattern works well with charm packs, remaking this quilt felt right!
I have also made some major improvements to the block. The original was inefficiently pieced; each block was in four different parts that created some incredibly bulky seams. I’ve since realized that each block can be a single unit of paper piecing, which also results in seams not coming to the corners where the blocks need to be joined. Plus, no seams that have to be matched just perfectly. So in all it’s a much smoother experience to put together now.
I used the same quilting as on the original quilt because I think it worked so well: a big spiral, done with my walking foot, starting at the center. Aside from the fact that curved quilting designs often contrast nicely with angular piecing designs like this one, I think the curves work nicely to move your eye around the quilt.
Each block uses one charm square, so it’s a great way to show off a charm pack. I don’t often tend to buy whole lines, but a charm pack is such a great way to get a little bit of each fabric in a new line in a really affordable way. Charm packs usually include more squares than you need for this quilt, but it means you’ll have your pick of which ones to use, plus a few left over that you could piece into the backing or save for another project.
