I made this quilt featuring a kraken for the Sea Monster mini quilt swap. I seriously love how it turned out!
I pieced the background, and then appliquéd the dark navy Kraken and ship on top. (Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures of that process!) I cut them both out with my Silhouette Curio cutting machine, and it turned out OK, but I have to say that the detail on the ship was at the limit of what a cutting machine could handle in fabric, and I had to simplify it several times. I used a batik-weave type fabric for the appliqué, because that tight weave is the only way to get anything cut properly.
The quilting was a bit of a pain, since I didn’t want to go over the appliqué with lighter blue thread and so had to keep stitching around it. I finished the quilt with a facing, so as not to have a border that distracted from the design.
I took these pictures on the coast while waiting for someone to deliver samples to me on the ferry over from Sapelo Island. It seemed appropriate to photograph this quilt by the sea, after all. (Fortunately, the ferry was not attacked by krakens, and I was able to safely get the samples back home.)
I am really happy with the way this sea monster mini quilt turned out, and I hope my partner likes it as much as I do.
