The Spooky Spider pattern is available in the Flying Parrot Quilts shop!
I originally designed the Spooky Spider pattern for my Epic Halloween Quilt, but for Quilt Market I’ve made another version. This one uses just the large block on its own to make a fun mini quilt (though I also put a pillow backing on it, so I’ll be able to use it as a pillow as well). The pattern is paper pieced, of course—I don’t know of any other good way to piece spider legs like that!
I had a bunch of Halloween fabrics left over from the Epic Halloween quilt, so I used one of my favorites for the background here. This print had little spiders scattered among the web, and just one managed to make it onto the mini up by the top left leg. It’s like a tiny little spider friend for the big spider! A few made it into the binding, too.
For the background quilting, I used a variation on a swirl design that looks like a spiderweb. The quilting in the spider is just some echoed lines, and then ditch-stitching around the spider itself. The hourglass on the spider’s body is in some of my favorite colors—not exactly Halloween colors, but I think it works nonetheless.
I’m looking forward to using this to step up my rather minimal Halloween decorating! If you’re making this pattern, be sure to check out my tips for efficient cutting of the background fabric in the original Epic Halloween Quilt-Along post about this pattern!
