This month’s featured block is “Flower Weave.”
The easiest way to find this block is by going into your block library, then selecting “Search by Notecard” at the bottom of the window and typing in “Flower Weave.”
Here’s the block in a simple quilt.
Anyone who was in my workshops or lectures at QuiltCon last week will know that this design definitely doesn’t have enough negative space for me! Time to remove stuff.
Now there’s negative space, rule of thirds, and visual motion!
Last month, though, I had so much fun with the Serendipity Kaleidoscope function that I decided I’m going to keep doing that with these blocks, since I do love complex blocks! Here’s the block that results from that.
And here it is in the same quilt layout as above.
Here it is recolored a bit so you can better see all the different patches.
What immediately struck me about this design is that there’s some interesting stuff going on with overlapping squares here. While I’ve admired quilts that include a “transparency” effect, I’ve never made one myself, so I thought I’d try playing around with that.
I also liked the stars, so I tried emphasizing those.
In this one, I like the way the overlapping squares form the stars! It would be interesting to play with removing some more things from this design.
Finally, I thought I’d play a little more with the concentric squares that are formed. This quilt is a bit busier, but I still think it makes a neat effect!
I’m really enjoying how many different quilt designs I can get out of the Serendipity effect, and I’m already looking forward to next month’s block!
