This pattern is one that I’m periodically asked for, so I’m happy to be releasing it today! The original version was pictured in my book, which contains a number of quilts/quilt designs that aren’t included as patterns in the quilt. This version is made with Christa Watson’s latest fabric lines, Gridwork and Good Vibes. Together, there is a great range of both colors and grays that make the quilt pop—I really like the way the negative space almost appears like a black-and-white photo with these fabrics!
This 36″ x 36″ quilt top comes together easily and quickly—it’s half square triangles with Dresden Plates appliquéd to a couple rows (although even that is super easy, because you only have to appliqué the points down!).
Where it really gets interesting is in the binding! The pattern is a great skill-builder if you’re looking to up your binding game, because it includes instructions on how to create a matched binding, including the color change in the mitered corner!
If you prefer not to do all that, I’ve also included instructions for a facing, which has a similar effect to the pieced binding (your quilt would appear completely borderless) but is a lot quicker and easier.
I’ve made several versions of this quilt because the binding instructions needed testing, so here is the original (made using shot cottons):
I also made a version in greens and purples, inspired by pictures of mountain ranges fading into the distance. I was starting to get into a rut with the way I quilted these quilts, so for this one I forced myself out of it and came up with a tree design for the zigzags, and used leaves in the petals of the Dresden Plates.
Thanks to my friend Marybeth of Cambridge Lane for binding this one!
You can find the PDF pattern here if you’d like to give this quilt a try!
