If you follow me over on Instagram, I shared this quilt design a couple of weeks ago as part of the IG hop celebrating Sassafras Lane’s new fabric collection “Favorite Things” for Windham Fabrics, where it got an enthusiastic reception. I’m excited to be able to release the quilt pattern today.
Petrichor is available in the Flying Parrot Quilts pattern shop.
“Petrichor” is the smell of rain on parched earth, and I think it captures the general feeling of this quilt design quite nicely. (Much thanks to Rebecca L. for suggesting this name, and teaching me a new word in the process of naming this quilt!)
There are four quilt sizes to choose from, and most of them (save the largest queen size) are pre-cut friendly—for the colored diamonds, the crib size uses fat eighths and the lap and full sizes use fat quarters, so it’s a great opportunity to dig into your stash or use a special bundle you’ve been saving. It’s a quilt that comes together quickly, too, since a significant portion of it is strip-pieced.
I originally planned to get fancy in the quilting and do a graffiti-style design, but I got only a very small section done before realizing that it wasn’t going to be visible on the black prints AT ALL, so I changed course and went with a quicker all-over flower design that I think ended up suiting the quilt really well.
The backing is another Windham Fabrics print, Newspaper by Carrie Bloomston, which I bought a whole bolt of when it came out. I’m almost through it at this point!
You can find the pattern available in paper format and PDF format in my shop. EU/UK customers, please use this link to the Petrichor PDF pattern.
And, use the code RAIN for 10% off through Sunday, March 14!
