I’ve written patterns for the Modern Quilt Guild’s Quilt of the Month program before, so when they got in touch last fall to ask if I’d be interested in making another quilt for the program, I of course jumped at the opportunity!
Lately, the MQG has been selecting a unified color palette for each quarter’s pattern releases, and this quarter’s selection was a bold mix of contrasting cool and warm colors (with a few grays thrown in, which I didn’t end up using).
They specifically asked for a quilt incorporating negative space, so I ended up choosing a traditional block called “Children of Israel” and using my “Extending Lines” technique for turning this block into a modern quilt. By carefully placing the colors, you end up with multiple ribbons woven across each other.
To complement the straight lines in this quilt, I quilted it with straight lines, except for a few little contrasting circles in the “buckles.”
As I so often find with extended line quilts, or quilts that have design elements reaching all the way to the edge of the quilt, finishing the quilt with a facing was the best choice here in order not to ruin the visual impact of those bold lines running across the quilt.
If you are a member of the MQG, you can download this pattern now on their site!
