Welcome to my stop on the Around the US Block Tour, where a new state or territory is featured every week! If you have not been following this tour, you have some catching up to do.
If you haven’t stopped by before, welcome! I’m Sylvia and I love modern quilts, science quilts, and paper piecing. You can find all of my patterns and my book on designing quilts with negative space in my shop.
Okay, on to the block! I moved to Maryland shortly after my fifth birthday, and although I wasn’t born there, I consider it my home state.
It would have been more in keeping with my background (I have a degree in marine science) to feature the state crustacean, the blue crab, on my block, but I’m afraid my vision for that was just a little too complicated for a 6″ block. So, I’m choosing to feature the state flower, the Black-eyed Susan, instead. Since I love paper piecing, of course it’s paper pieced!
You can get this pattern for free by signing up for my newsletter—click HERE!
This block has a bunch of pieces, but they’re all very simple and so the block goes together very quickly. If you’ve never paper pieced before, you can download my tutorial here!

I love this! I planted a small envelope of Black Eyed Susan seeds about 10 years ago and they are still going strong and spreading out, the neighbors have all taken seeds and so they continue around the neighborhood! The butterflies love them.
